Chromatography For Kids

Professor Owen tries to trick some extra candy from professor Eve, but science saves the day!

To try Chromatography for yourself you will need:

Chromatography Materials

  • A selection of water soluble felt tip pens from different  manufacturers.  (Black works really well but other colors work too)
  • Absorbent paper, we used coffee filter paper – you can just about see it under the pens!
  • A glass of water
  • A shallow plate
  • Some sticky tape
  • Scissors

Lets have a go!

First take your coffee filter or absorbent paper and cut a small rectangle out of it.

Cut a rectangle

Now draw on the paper about 10mm from the bottom with the felt tip pens.  You could just draw a small dot or just about anything!  We wrote a sentence using 2 different black pens so we could compare the difference.

Write on the paper

Now we need to put a small amount of water into a shallow plate, less than 10mm deep so it doesn’t cover the pen we put on the paper.  Then stand the glass in the water.

Pour some water

Next stick the paper onto the glass using sticky tape so that the bottom of the paper touches the bottom of the plate and the bottom of the paper is in the water.

This is an easy method for young Mini Scientists, but the glass may affect the way the colors separate (like in our video), for better results you could hang the paper in the water using cotton and 2 glasses :)

Stick it to the glass

Pretty cool :)

The results!

So how does it work?

As the water creeps up the paper the different ingredients of the ink are drawn up with it.  These ingredients travel up the paper at different rates and so we are able to see each individual color that makes up each ink.

In the video we used black inks, but you can try other colors too, can you guess what colors these examples started out as?

Have a go and let us know how it went below :)
